From Dick's Gadget WarehouseThe original PhoneMate Model 400 was introduced in 1971, weighed 10 pounds, and used a reel-to-reel tape (shown on the left). Dick's was a later model which used a single cassette tape.
"Hi, I'm Lauren Bacall !"
After Bill Gaines got his first answering machine, he started getting messages from celebrities, such as Lauren Bacall, Bill Cullen, Peggy Cass, Gene Rayburn. Bill thought it was some master mimic like Rich Little playing a practical joke on him.
Mad Philosophy
When asked if MAD had philosophy, Bill answered, "MAD's philosophy is we must never stop reminding our readers how little value they're getting for their money."
